The Gallatin National Forest encompasses 2,149,629 acres in south central Montana. The Forest is adjacent to Yellowstone National Park. This Forest contains portions of the Lee Metcalf and Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Areas.

Big-game species found in the area include bear, elk, moose, big horn sheep, mule and whitetail deer and Rocky Mountain goat. Along the trails, naturalists and photographers can see a variety of songbirds, hawks, eagles, and owls. In shaded groves, along quiet pools and out on the windswept range, gophers, chipmunks, beaver, porcupine, woodchucks, rabbits, squirrels, and other animals can be watched and photographed.

"Wonderful mountain forest and rivers run along this hidden treasure. Nearby Yellowstone gets the attention but you should visit Cooke City and the trails of this National Forest. The forest trails are well kept and some trail heads have parking. Beware of insects in summer. As in any National Forest dogs are allowed in leashes."

"Amazing Views in the National Forest! We stayed in an RV in a pull-off because of rain, but it was breathtaking! Highly recommend touring this natural wonder! God has created so much beauty, I hope we can be good stewards of it!"

"We stayed at Slim Buttes while hunting for four days. Right in the heart of Harding county. Great place to make camp and enjoy the scenery when not hunting. I'd definitely come here just for a weekend trip to just find peace. There are multiple outhouses, but no other services. It was perfect for us!!! Can't beat the sunrises and sunsets either!"

"Beautiful lake and views. Apparently even most locals aren't familiar with the area. Hiking trail and some free climbing opportunities for experienced climbers. About 15 free camping sights. Can stay up to 16 days i believe. A good place to leave no trace. Take out more than you packed in."
